In collaboration with the African Climate Reality Project and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, Youth Lab hosted a movie screening and panel discussion focused on climate change and policy. The event aimed to engage young people in understanding the complexities of climate change within a South African context and empower them to participate in shaping climate policy. The event began with a mini-workshop which provided a comprehensive overview of climate change, its causes, and its impacts. This session aimed to equip participants with foundational knowledge about the climate crisis.
Afterwards, the documentary "African Voices for Africa's Forests" was screened, highlighting issues of climate justice, land rights, and nature-based solutions in Cameroon. The film sparked discussions on the interconnectedness of environmental issues and social justice.
The event yielded several key insights:
Youth Empowerment: Participants expressed a strong desire to actively contribute to climate action. They recognized the potential of youth-led initiatives to drive positive change.
Gender and Environmental Justice: The discussion highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change on women and marginalised communities. Participants emphasised the need for inclusive and equitable climate policies.
The Power of Community: The importance of community-based solutions and grassroots activism was underscored. Participants shared ideas for local initiatives, such as community gardens and waste reduction campaigns.
Knowledge and Awareness: There was a consensus on the need for increased access to accurate and accessible information about climate change. Participants called for more educational opportunities and awareness campaigns.
The movie screening and panel discussion proved to be a valuable platform for engaging young people in climate change discourse. By fostering critical thinking, inspiring action, and building community, the event empowered participants to become active agents of change. As we navigate the challenges of the climate crisis, it is imperative to continue investing in youth-led initiatives and to create spaces for young people to share their ideas and drive sustainable solutions.
