Youth Lab hosted a policy conversation which explored the importance of civic education in building a strong, informed, and engaged citizenry, with young people in Bellavista, Johannesburg. Participants delved into the core principles of democracy, gaining a deeper understanding of:

  • Foundational Values: Equality, justice, and human rights as the pillars of a fair and just society;

  • Political Processes: Participants learned about elections, legislative functions, and the roles of different government branches. They also discussed the importance of voting and potential changes they'd like to see within their communities.

  • Rights & Responsibilities: The workshop explored both citizen rights (freedom of speech, assembly, religion) and responsibilities (voting, paying taxes, obeying laws) crucial for a democratic society. A specific concern raised was the feeling of government neglect regarding rampant gangsterism in this community.

  • Civic Participation: Active engagement is key! Voting, attending community meetings, doing community service, and collaborating on solutions as young people were highlighted as central ways for young people to be involved and active in their communities. Participants explored how such actions strengthen democratic institutions and promote accountability.

Diversity & Inclusion: A healthy democracy thrives on diverse perspectives and voices. The workshop emphasised respect for this diversity and encouraged dialogue and collaboration to build a more cohesive society.
