Young people in South Africa have constantly pushed the boundaries of what political participation means. Through protests, alternative democratic actions and community organising, youth have extended their voices beyond voting and traditional political processes. Increasingly, we are learning the various ways young people are communicating what active citizenry looks like by prioritising community participation over traditional ways of practising politics. These activities need to be supported by building strong civic skills and supporting youth-led community interventions. Public Achievement was born against this backdrop.
Public Achievement is a project that gives substance and form to youth civic and political education. The project leverages the gains of new political organising made by young people in recent years by providing a non partisan, community driven and skills-based approach to civic and political participation. This model combines teaching citizen centred approach to democracy with practical coaching in civic and organisational skills for change.
Community Recruitment and Selection
Participating communities are identified based on criteria such as need, interest, and existing youth engagement initiatives. Outreach activities are conducted to attract community leaders and young people to participate. Applications are evaluated, and communities that align with the project's goals are selected.
Coach Training
Public Achievement Coaches are trained in community organising principles, facilitation skills, project management, and youth development. Training workshops are conducted to ensure coaches have the necessary skills to mentor Community Action Teams effectively.
Democracy Bootcamps
Two-day Democracy Bootcamps are held in each participating community. These bootcamps cover key concepts in democracy, citizen education, and community organising. Interactive sessions, group discussions, and case studies are facilitated to engage participants and promote critical thinking. Participants identify pressing community challenges and brainstorm potential solutions.
Team Formation and Project Development
Participants are divided into Community Action Teams, ensuring diversity in age, background, and interests. Team captains are assigned and receive leadership training. Team-building activities are facilitated to foster collaboration and trust. Teams are provided with a project budget and a six-week timeline to develop and implement their projects. Regular meetings between teams and their coaches are scheduled to offer guidance, support, and accountability.
Project Implementation
Teams receive support in identifying and securing necessary resources, such as materials, equipment, and funding. Project progress is monitored, and challenges or obstacles are addressed. Mentorship and coaching are provided to help teams develop effective project plans and strategies. Partnerships between teams and local organisations are facilitated to leverage existing resources and expertise.
Showcase Events
Community-wide showcase events are organised to celebrate the achievements of the Community Action Teams. Teams present their projects, share their experiences, and receive recognition for their contributions. Local stakeholders, community leaders, and the general public are invited to attend the events. Discussions and networking opportunities are facilitated to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing.
